INGREDIENTS


  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups shredded peeled tart apples
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts

Vanilla Sauce

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup light cream
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS


  1. In a mixing bowl, cream sugar and shortening together
  2. Add egg and mix well
  3. Add the dry ingredients
  4. Mix well.
  5. Fold in the apples and walnuts
  6. Spread in a greased 8 inch square baking pan
  7. Bake at 350 for 35 to 40 minutes or until cake tests done with a toothpick
  8. For sauce, combine sugar, cornstarch, and cream in a sauce pan
  9. Bring to a boil over medium heat; boil for 2 minutes
  10. Remove from the heat. Add butter and vanilla; stir until butter is melted
  11. Serve warm over warm cake
